Ranking the Resident Evil Series

Resident Evil is a horror video game series from Capcom. Originally released in Japan under the name Biohazard, the franchise has spawned several sequels, movies, television shows, comics, and books.

The game series focuses on survival by limiting resources, making enemies difficult to kill, and tying in extensive exploration of the world.

The focus of the game series has changed over the years. From a story about a group of people battling the Umbrella Corporation that develop bio-organic weapons that raise the dead, to smaller scale, dramatic stories set in different periods and locations.

Here are our favorite games in the series.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 was released on the GameCube in 2005 and sold more than 10 million copies across all of its many ports to other consoles and the PC. Among critics and fans, that game is considered the best in the series. Resident Evil 4 expands on the gameplay of previous entries by giving players more freedom in combat.

The story follows Leon Kennedy on a mission to save the President’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by a group of farmers who were taken over by a mind-controlling parasite. The game expands from there, introducing several new enemy types and locations.

Resident Evil 2 – Remake

Resident Evil 2 remakes the game of the same name originally released in 1998. The game artfully took the game’s original style and gameplay mechanics and gave them a refresh. Built on the RE Engine, the game received praise for its visuals, character models, and updates to the story. While the game will be familiar to those who played the original, it is worth playing it all over again.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7 shifts gears dramatically, changing the game’s perspective to the first person to heighten the horror aspects of the game. In this new perspective, scares get more real, puzzles more interesting, and exploration more fun. Use of the RE Engine is highlighted here, featuring high-resolution textures, models, and gore. Resident Evil 7 will continue with the sequel, Resident Evil Village, set to release in 2021.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Resident Evil 3 introduces the mechanic that your choices matter to the game. For some, the game isn’t a favorite. A shift from horror to action wasn’t entirely well-received, and its short length has been criticized. However, the introduction of Nemesis, a massive brute of an enemy that stalks players throughout the story, proves to be a formidable enemy and heightens the game’s tension.

Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 was released on the Playstation 4 and Xbox 360 in 2009. Taking place five years after Resident Evil 4, you play an agent who travels to Kijuju, Africa. You work to recover a bio-organic weapon off the black market. Things turn south when the infection escapes, and players must overcome every-increasing difficulty challenges.

Resident Evil is a Worthwhile Time Investment

Resident Evil is a long-running and popular series. For newbies and fans of the series, there is a lot of content here. Whether you play the game out of order or start from the beginning, it is worth the time to sit down and play through them all.
