Virtua Fighter Characters Who Use Real Fighting Techniques

Virtua Fighter initially launched in 1993 in arcades. If you played it, you probably learned why you should love fighting game controllers.

Most notably, Virtua Fighter was the first fighting game to use 3D-based models, helping pioneer the development of 3D polygon human characters. This was in contrast to other popular fighting games of the era, including Mortal Kombat and Tekken that relied on 2D sprites.

Virtua Fighter is innovative in its approach to character design and development. The fictional characters in the game had attack moves modeled after real fighting techniques.

  • Bājíquán practiced by Akira – This Chinese martial arts style means “eight extremities fist,” which describes how the user can strike with the elbow, arm or fist, hip, and shoulder. This style relies on explosive power in close range. Add in a charging step for increased acceleration during the attack. 
  • Jeet Kune Do practiced by Jacky – Bruce Lee developed this technique, which means “Way of the Intercepting Fist.” Jeet Kune Do is not meant to be a style. Rather, it is a set of philosophies designed to contradict the more rigid styles developed by other practitioners. Lee’s approach promoted spontaneity and intense training, allowing the user to adapt and change in response to their opponent.  
  • Aiki-jūjutsu practiced by Aoi – This fighting style gained popularity in the early 20th century. Its origins are not entirely known but can be traced back to the 11th century. The Aiki-jūjutsu style uses non-resistance, allowing the opponent to attack before turning their strength and motion against them. Counters, throws, and sweeps to the neck, knees, and wrists are used to gain leverage.
  • Judo practiced by Goh – Judo is the primary style used in mixed martial arts competitions and has remained popular as MMA has grown. It is best known for being focused on takedowns. The goal is to get an opponent to the ground and immobilize them through a choke or joint lock. When done successfully, a much smaller opponent can, in theory, win over a much larger opponent.
  • Sumo practiced by Taka-Arashi – Sumo is a contact sport with the goal of either pushing an opponent out of a circular ring or bringing them to the ground. However, sumo wrestlers can not use the soles of their feet. They instead rely on throwing, shoving, and pushing to win. Large body mass is used to gain an advantage. Sumo follows a set of traditions, including pre-ceremony purification practices.
  • Hagakure-ryū Jū-Jutsu practiced by Kage – This fighting style relies on a combination of philosophies that range in meaning, from gentle and soft, to pliable and art. There are several variations of this fighting technique, including those found in Jūjutsu, which most often uses grappling combined with throwing, strangling, joint locks, holds, striking with the legs, and disengagements.
